Is anybody doing this with images or comic strips?
Print these tags out and sticker them all over the place. Put them in books. Everybody's got a phone, no? Flashmob tags. And so on.

You really don't need the reader to read the Haiku. You can just mouse over it and read it out of the URL. You can save the image, thereby hiding the message. :-) Just thought I'd metion it now since there seems to be interest, and wouldn't want anyone spoiling it.
There is also this type of code: http://semacode.org/ albeit, not as open as QR-codes have been.
Kancept is right -- you can see the words of the haiku in the URL for the image -- but this wouldn't be a very expedient way to pull more text or a longer poem from the image... & it most especially wouldn't work for a pic or comic strip.
Update... I took the URL clue off the image! You'll have to use your phones, now.

Hi,
I also wanted to add that you the Kaywa Reader can equally read QR Codes and Semacodes (which is Datamatrix). So both work well.
Now I have a riddle for you. And do not cheat on that one;)
